1 Product Overview
The Taiwan Licence-Plate Recognition Camera is an AI network camera for car-park entrances, community and campus access control, logistics parks, fleet management, and fuel or charging stations. It combines video capture, edge AI inference, video encoding and network streaming in one unit. Its core capability is Taiwan plate recognition — detecting vehicle plates in view, reading the plate number, and outputting, snapshotting and reporting the result directly.
Two form factors are available: a box camera and a bullet camera. They share one hardware platform and algorithm, with identical algorithm, protocol and interface specifications; only the housing and mounting differ, so they can be mixed per camera position.

2 Form Factors
Both form factors share one hardware platform. Algorithms, protocols and interface specifications are identical; only the housing and mounting differ.
Taiwan licence-plate box camera
| Structure | All-in-one box · wall or bracket mount |
| Body | Compact square housing with adjustable front angle |
| Mounting | Wall, door frame, pole |
| Angle adjustment | Side bracket fixing with fine tilt adjustment |
| Cabling | Lead cable, neat wall routing, suited to indoor fixed points |
| Typical positions | Car-park entrances, campus gates, fixed lane points |
Taiwan licence-plate bullet camera
| Structure | Bullet housing · bracket mount |
| Body | Bullet housing with front fill light and sunshield, suited to backlight and strong light |
| Sunshield | Sunshield included to suppress overexposure from direct strong light |
| Mounting | Above the lane, gate crossbeam, campus gate pole |
| Angle adjustment | Bracket mount with adjustable angle for wide coverage |
Choosing a form factor
| Item | Box camera | Bullet camera |
|---|
| Structure | All-in-one box | Bullet housing |
| Strong-light handling | Fair | Better (with sunshield) |
| Coverage | Small to medium fixed points | Wide area |
| Mounting | Wall / pole bracket | Crossbeam / bracket |
| Appearance | Cleaner | Industrial |
Recommendation: choose the bullet camera where glare must be suppressed (entrance lanes with headlight glare) or a wide lane must be covered; choose the box camera for guard booths, indoor lanes and other compact fixed points.
3 Core Function: Taiwan Plate Recognition
Plate recognition is the core capability. The device first detects the vehicle and plate area, then reads the plate number. Inference runs on-device, so real-time recognition, snapshots and reporting work without a back-end server.
3.1 Recognition capability
| Item | Description | Output |
|---|
| Taiwan plate recognition | Core capability: detect the plate area in view and read the plate number; covers new and legacy car plates, motorcycle plates and E-prefix EV plates (list in section 4) | Plate number + confidence |
| Vehicle detection | Detect and frame vehicle targets to support plate location and snapshots | Bounding box + confidence |
| Snapshot and record | Snapshot on detection or on a schedule; image and result stored together | JPG snapshot + result + timestamp |
| Event reporting | Push results and snapshots to a given HTTP address, or to your own platform | HTTP POST (image / result) |
3.2 Alarms and linkage
| Method | Description |
|---|
| Platform linkage | On detection, send alarm or event notifications to the platform per policy |
| Snapshot reporting | Capture a JPG automatically on an event and upload it to a given HTTP address |
| Scheduled reporting | Scheduled snapshots uploaded to a cloud server (for example one per minute) |
| Secondary development | HTTP API for integration with your own management platform |
3.3 Recognition guidance
| Item | Guidance |
|---|
| Mounting height | 3 m ~ 3.5 m above or beside the lane, tilt 10° ~ 25°; 2 m ~ 2.5 m for motorcycle or mixed lanes |
| Recognition distance | Vehicle 3 m ~ 8 m from the lens; plate area at least 1/8 of the frame height |
| Vehicle speed | Low-speed traffic (≤ 20 km/h recommended). This is a general-purpose AI camera without strobe fill light; high-speed capture requires a dedicated plate-capture device |
| Framing | Plate facing the lens, no large side angle; aim the lens along the direction of travel |
| Lighting | Avoid direct headlight glare; provide ambient light or fill light at night entrances |
| Multiple targets | Best with one vehicle at a time; with several vehicles, the clearest target in frame takes priority |
Note: AI recognition is an optional algorithm capability; accuracy figures are confirmed commercially before delivery. Recognition rates drop for damaged, distorted, strongly backlit or distant small plates — validate on site.
4 Plate Styles and Recognition Range
Taiwan has issued new-style plates for all cars and motorcycles since December 2012, using a three-letter prefix plus four digits. Legacy plates issued from 1992 are still in wide use, so the algorithm supports both. The styles covered are listed below.
4.1 Recognition range
| Plate style | Format | Example | Notes |
|---|
| New-style car plate | 3 letters + 4 digits | ABC-1234 | 380 × 160 mm; black on white for private cars, red on white for some commercial categories |
| New-style motorcycle plate | 3 letters + 4 digits | ABC-1234 | Smaller than a car plate; black on white for ordinary heavy motorcycles |
| Heavy motorcycle plate | 3 letters + 4 digits | ABC-1234 | Black on yellow (over 250 cc), white on red (over 550 cc) |
| Legacy car / motorcycle plate | 2~3 letters and 2~4 digits, position varies | AA-1234 / AAA-123 / 123-AAA | Issued from 1992; still widely in use |
| EV plate | E-prefix and other dedicated ranges | EAB-0001 | Dedicated ranges for electric cars and motorcycles, including white on green styles |
Scope: plate styles and formats follow the current rules of the Taiwan region transport authority. Special plates (temporary, test, diplomatic, brown classic-vehicle plates and similar) are outside standard recognition. Recognition rates drop for damaged, distorted, strongly backlit or distant small plates — validate on site.
4.2 Factors that affect recognition
| Factor | Description |
|---|
| Plate condition | Dirt, distortion, decorative frames or obstructions sharply reduce the rate or prevent recognition |
| Camera angle | Large tilt or side angles distort characters; keep the plate facing the lens |
| Plate size | When the plate is too small in frame (below 1/8 of frame height) characters cannot be read; shorten the distance or use a longer focal length |
| Lighting | No fill light at night, headlight overexposure and strong backlight all lower the rate |
| Vehicle speed | Higher speed means more motion blur in a single frame; ≤ 20 km/h is recommended |
